EXTRACTIONS

PROVIDING TOOTH PAIN RELIEF WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST

Extractions are an oral surgery procedure that may be necessary if a tooth cannot be saved through a restorative dentistry procedure. Anthony Martin Dentistry of Yorktown, VA offers extractions for patients who may have irreparable damage to a tooth. If a tooth is causing severe pain affecting the quality of your life, it may need to be extracted. Though we try to only remove a tooth when absolutely necessary, sometimes a tooth extraction is the only service we can offer a patient.

REASONS FOR TOOTH EXTRACTIONS

Sometimes removing a tooth is the best thing we can do for a patient’s oral and overall health. Some teeth need to be extracted because they cannot be repaired due to:

  • Severe decay
  • Advanced periodontal disease
  • Prevent the spread of infection in a severely infected tooth
  • Tooth that is broken in a way that can’t be repaired
  • Preparations for orthodontic treatment
  • Impacted wisdom teeth

WHEN ARE TOOTH EXTRACTIONS NECESSARY?

In most cases, we strive to save your natural teeth when we can. There are treatment options that can preserve your natural teeth such as root canals and crowns. After a thorough examination, we will be able to determine if your tooth can be saved or will need to be extracted. Your comfort and quality of life are one of our top priorities at Anthony Martin Dentistry. We will work with you to determine which plan of action will be the most beneficial to your oral health.

At Anthony Martin Dentistry located in Yorktown, VA, we perform many extractions, but not on all patients that come through our door. Fortunately, we have some great oral surgeons in our area that often help us with more complicated cases.

TOOTH EXTRACTION PROCEDURE

If Dr. Martin determines you need an extraction, he will first discuss the procedure with you in detail so you know exactly what to expect. He will then apply a local anesthesia to keep you as comfortable and calm as possible. A simple extraction involves using forceps to loosen the tooth and then remove it. More complicated cases may involve impacted teeth or teeth located below the gum line may require the surgeon to make incisions in the gum. Afterwards, they may place stitches to help promote healing.

HEALING FROM AN EXTRACTION

Following your procedure, our team at Anthony Martin Dentistry will provide you with post-op care instructions to make your healing journey speedy and without complications. Many patients feel fully healed within a couple of days and return to their normal daily activities in 48 to 72 hours. Here are some recommendations we have once you leave our Yorktown office:

  • Keeping the gum where your tooth was extracted clean will be key to prevent infection.  Make sure you rinse your mouth about two and three times a day and try to avoid brushing over the affected area, but make sure to clean the rest of your teeth normally.
  • If your mouth is feeling sore, you can take some over the counter pain medicine such as tylenol or ibuprofen to keep the discomfort manageable.
  • It’s also a good idea to take a break from the gym, about two days off. That’s because when your heart rate is elevated, it can actually increase your risk of bleeding and pain.
