WHAT TYPE OF SEDATION IS USED FOR DENTAL PROCEDURES

At Martin Dentistry we use a medication called Halcion. Most of our patients take one .25mg tablet the night before their appointment and two tablets (.5mg) one hour before their appointment. Patients are required to have someone drive them to and from their appointment.
Halcion is a low-dose drug, which provides a great level of relaxation. It is a safe and effective drug. Combined with our calming environment many of our patients fall asleep.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

With the use of Halcion, we have been able to treat a large number of patients with extreme phobia or anxiety. To date, we have always been able to complete the work comfortably for everyone. In fact, most people don’t even remember the procedure.

One of the major benefits of sedation dentistry is that people often feel like their dental procedure lasts only a few minutes, when in fact it might have taken hours to perform. Therefore, complex dental procedures such as smile makeovers or extensive rebuilding procedures that normally require multiple visits can often be performed in fewer appointments.

Most of our sedation patients take one .25mg tablet the night before their appointment, and two tablets (.5mg) one hour before their appointment the next morning. Someone of course drives them to and from their appointment. Our experienced staff will make certain that you’re relaxed and completely comfortable. You will be monitored very closely while you are sedated.

Most patients feel no discomfort whatsoever during their treatment and feel surprisingly good afterward. At the end of the treatment, you’ll have little or no memory of your dental visit. You will feel just fine. For most patients, the effects last between 2-4 hours. Therefore, for your safety, we do require that you have a family member or friend drive you home.

We’ll review your insurance coverage and, if necessary, make financial arrangements to insure you get the dental care you need.

There are many good candidates for the procedure but we like to limit its use to adults. If you experience any of the following and are an otherwise healthy adult, you are likely a great candidate for Sedation Dentistry: fear of visiting the dentist, experienced past traumatic dental work, difficulty getting numb, limited time to complete your dental care, complex dental problems, fear of needles/dental noises or are afraid and embarrassed by your teeth.

REAL TESTIMONIALS FROM PATIENTS IN HAMPTON ROADS

“I have watched mouth makeover’s on TV for years thinking I could never have a smile like that because I hate even getting my teeth cleaned. I heard a radio advertisement about sedation dentistry and I started wondering if that could be an option for me. I talked to Dr. Martin and he was understanding and knowledgeable. I am so excited about my new smile makeover. Because of Dr. Martin and sedation, I will have the smile I have always wanted just in time for my wedding!”

Amy

“I had terrible problems going to the dentist over the years because of fear. After my first visit with Dr. Martin he made me feel so comfortable I was able to ask about sedation. From that point on I was able to have my dental work done without stress. It made all the difference for me. Now I don’t have to avoid my trips to the dentist and I have been able to have the work done to my teeth that I have been avoiding for years.”

Susan

“I avoided going to the dentist for over ten years. When we moved to Hampton Roads I simply could not avoid the discomfort anymore. I heard through a neighbor about Dr. Martin. After canceling several appointments I finally forced myself to go in for a consultation. Dr. Martin was kind and understanding and I did not feel embarrassed about my anxiety or the condition of my teeth. I now go every six months for regular checkups and my mouth has never felt better.”
