Maintaining Healthy Gums

At Anthony Martin Dentistry, we offer a complete line of dental services in a professional and friendly environment. We aim to keep your teeth, gums and overall oral health in great shape. Gum (periodontal) disease is affects nearly half of adults 30 years and older, according to the CDC.  It is important to care for your gums as they provide the foundation for your teeth.  Generally, healthy gums means healthy teeth.  Here are some basic tips for maintaining healthy gums:

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Make sure to brush along the gum line in addition to all of the surfaces of your teeth.
  2. Replace worn-out toothbrushes.  Your toothbrush should be replaced at least every three to four months as the wear on the brush can damage gums unnecessarily.
  3. Floss once a day.  It is imperative to maintain good gum health by flossing between teeth or using an inter-dental cleaner once a day.  Flossing helps reduce plaque buildup which can lead to decay.
  4. See your dentist for checkups and cleanings two times a year.  It is your job to take care of your teeth and gums every day.  However, you need to see your dentist twice a year for checkups and to ensure that you get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide.
  5. Remember your angles.  It is important for gum health to brush the top teeth with your brush angled down and the bottom teeth with your brush angled up.  This will keep loosen food particles from your teeth and gums and optimize your gum health.
  6. Keep your dentist in the loop.  Notify your dentist about any changes in your overall health, especially if you are  pregnant or entering  menopause, or have a disease such as diabetes. In these cases, pay special care to your dental health. You may be more susceptible to gum diseases like gingivitis.
  7. Limit sugary snacks and drinks. The pH of your mouth should stay as neutral as possible. When we eat sugary snacks and drinks we alter the pH and this creates an environment that promotes decay.
  8. Eat a balanced diet. A recent study in men age 65 and older showed a special benefit to eating a diet rich in high-fiber fruit. This appears to slow the progression of periodontal disease.
  9. Stop smoking. People who smoke are more likely to have a buildup of plaque and  tartar.  Smokers may be up to four times more likely to develop advanced periodontal disease than nonsmokers.
  10. Use antibacterial mouth rinse.  Antibacterial mouth rinses can reduce bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease, according to the American Dental Association.
